In a broad sense, any chemical that can enhance the stability of solutions, colloids, solids, and mixtures is called a stabilizer. It can slow down reactions, maintain chemical equilibrium, reduce surface tension, and prevent decomposition due to light, heat, or oxidation, among other effects. The sources of broad-spectrum chemical stabilizers are very diverse, and they can flexibly use any chemical according to the design purpose of the formulators to achieve product quality stability.
In a narrow sense, it mainly refers to reagents that maintain the stability of high polymers such as plastics, rubber, and synthetic fibers, preventing their decomposition and aging.
Commonly used thermal stabilizers in industry mainly include lead salts, metal soaps, organic tin, organic antimony, organic rare earths, and pure organic compounds. It is estimated that China currently has a thermal stabilizer production capacity of 70,000 tons per year, with a consumption of about 80,000 tons per year in 2000. The focus of lead salt development in China is to eliminate dust pollution, and relevant measures have been taken; the market consumption ratio of organic tin in China is relatively low; due to ineffective promotion of high-performance auxiliary stabilizers, there is still a lack of cost-effective composite metal soap systems in the market; rare earth stabilizers are a new force in the development of thermal stabilizers in China. Global consumption of thermal stabilizers has exceeded 300,000 tons per year, with the United States representing the latest level of thermal stabilizer development in the world, leading the way in lead-free initiatives; Japan's thermal stabilizer production is about 60,000 to 70,000 tons per year, still mainly based on lead salts; Western Europe consumes about 110,000 tons per year.
