Introduction to the Characteristics of Impact Modifiers

2025-01-13

According to a report by the American Plastics Industry Consulting Company, the global demand for plastic impact modifiers in 2004 was 600,000 tons (with a market value of approximately $1.5 billion). Among them, styrenic copolymers such as ABS and methyl methacrylate-butadiene-styrene (MBS) became the largest category of impact modifiers, accounting for about 45% of the market share, while acrylics accounted for nearly 30%. Elastomers, including EPDM and thermoplastic elastomers (TPE), accounted for about 10% of the market share; chlorinated polyethylene (CPE) accounted for 10%, and Others accounted for 5%. It is predicted that from 2004 to 2009, the average annual growth rate of styrenic impact modifiers will be less than 3%, while the average growth rate of other categories will be 5%-6%. Since PVC is the largest usage variety of impact modifiers, accounting for about 80% of the consumption, the growth in PVC demand will also drive an increase in the demand for impact modifiers. Engineering plastic resins such as PC, polyamide (PA), and polyester consume about 10% of impact modifiers. Due to the strong growth in demand for engineering plastics, the usage of impact modifiers is also increasing. Polyolefin resins consume about 10% of impact modifiers. Experts point out that the future development trend of impact modifiers is to have better performance, lower prices, and faster action, allowing for improved performance of the main materials or making components thinner while ensuring performance. Among foreign companies, products like Arkema's Durastrength can significantly improve the impact resistance of PVC. Additionally, companies such as Compton, DuPont, and Dow Chemical have also launched their own applicable products.
