The reason lubricants can provide lubrication is that their addition reduces the friction of the plastic melt, which can be divided into internal friction and external friction. Accordingly, there are internal lubricants and external lubricants.
1. The main function of external lubricants is to improve the friction conditions between the polymer melt and the hot metal surfaces of the equipment, making it easier for plastic parts to be released from the mold. It has poor compatibility with the polymer and is prone to migrate out of the melt. During the molding process, it can form a very thin isolation film between the melt and the mold, preventing the plastic from sticking to the mold surface.
2. Internal lubricants have good compatibility with polymers. They reduce the cohesive force between polymer molecules inside the polymer, thereby improving the internal friction heat generation and flowability of the plastic melt. The bond between internal lubricants and the long-chain molecules of the polymer is not strong, and they may act similarly to rolling bearings. Therefore, they can arrange themselves in the direction of melt flow, allowing them to slide against each other, which reduces internal friction. This is the mechanism of internal lubrication.
